The University of California, Santa Barbara began as the Anna Blake School in 1891 and joined the University of California system in 1944. Seven years later, in 1949, the Regents acquired 400 acres of a vacated Marine Corps Air Station in Goleta, establishing what would become the campus's primary location. UCSB was formally constituted as a full university in 1958 and today ranks eighth among United States public universities according to Forbes's 2024-2025 rankings.
The campus sits on a coastal plain overlooking the Pacific Ocean, with academic and residential buildings serving a community of more than 24,000 students and faculty.
